SPEAKER: Jay R. Fries, Partner with FordHarrison

Jay R. Fries is a partner with FordHarrison law group.  Prior to joining FordHarrison, Mr. Fries was a labor law practitioner with a Cincinnati based law firm.  Mr. Fries graduated cum laude from Washington and Lee University and received his law degree from the Law School of the College of William and Mary, where he served as an editor of the Law Review. He has authored numerous articles on labor relations topics and frequently serves as a presenter at employment relations seminars and programs, including the recent HR Compliance Roadmap; From Hiring Through Termination event with Lorman Educational Institute and the Employment Law Update with Carroll County SHRM.  Mr. Fries is an active member of the Maryland, Virginia, and Baltimore County bar associations, and the Labor Law Section of the American Bar Association.

Over the past two weeks, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has taken two actions that dramatically change the labor relations landscape.  On December 12, 2014, the NLRB announced that it was adopting the final rule amending its procedures for union representation elections, which goes into effect on April 14,2015.  Are you prepared?

During this meeting, Mr. Fries will explain the practical effects of the Board's recent actions, the consequences for employers and the actions that employers should take now to minimize their risk. Attendees will learn:

    • When and how an employer may lawfully restrict us of its email system after the Board's Purple Communications decision.

    • How the Board will handle election petitions effective April 14, 2014, and how that differs from the current procedures.

    • What steps employers can take to prepare for a union organizing drive, and why those actions must take place before a petition is filed with the NLRB.

This meeting has been approved for 1.5 HR (General) recertification credits toward PHR, SPHR, and GPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute.  The use of this seal is not an endorsement by the HR Certification Institute of the quality of the program.  It means that this program has met the HR Certification Institute's criteria to be pre-approved for recertification credit.
