    This roundtable session will provide a brief overview of the history of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993, a law that provides unpaid, job-protected leave for workers. Participants will learn the history of FMLA, the coverage it provides, and employee and employer rights and responsibilities. Following the overview, there will be a Q&A segment to address challenges that HR and business professionals face in today’s workplace regarding FMLA leave management and compliance.

    Speaker Info:

    Linda Williams is the HR Manager for the defense contracting company Smartronix, Inc.  In 1975, Linda began her career in the HR arena after graduating from business school and working alongside Benefit Coordinators, eventually becoming a Benefits Administrator herself.  For the next 20 plus years, Linda worked as a Benefits Coordinator for both a public utility company and a law firm.  While in these roles, she became more involved in various employment laws such as COBRA, ERISA and FMLA, leading to her working and conducting research for several associates/partners in the law firm.  In 1999, Linda became an HR Manager and became more involved with management projects such as PeopleSoft HRIS and Kronos Timekeeping Systems. She has been a member of SHRM since 1999 and a member of HRASM since 2008.  Linda has more than 40 years of HR experience and is considered an FMLA expert by her peers.

    Deana Kilgore is the HR Administrator for the defense contracting company American Electronics, Inc. (Amelex). Among her current roles, Deana administers and ensures compliance of the FMLA policy and other required regulations. Throughout her 14 plus year career, Deana served in the US Navy, worked in various other HR and business roles, and also served as a Naval Ombudsman. Deana obtained an HRCI Professionals of Human Resources (PHR) Certification in 2008 and completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Resources Management in 2010. She has been a SHRM member since 2007, and a HRASM member since 2009. Deana previously served two terms as the HRASM Treasurer, and currently serves on the HRASM Board of Directors.

    This meeting has been approved for 1 General recertification credit toward PHR, SPHR, and GPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute.
