During this Insider Threat Awareness meeting for Human Resources (HR) professionals, we will focus on educating HR teams about identifying and mitigating potential insider risks within an organization. Key topics include understanding insider threats, recognizing behavioral indicators, and implementing preventative policies such as pre-employment screening and compliance monitoring. The session will explore best practices, tools, and real-world scenarios to equip HR with practical strategies for fostering a secure and supportive workplace. Collaboration with IT, legal, and security teams will be emphasized, highlighting HR's critical role in a proactive approach to insider threat management.

Description: What is Insider Threat and why it is important, how it is affecting us, what you can do about it, and how to handle an Insider Threat if you discover one?

    Learning Objectives:

    1.  What is an Insider Threat?

    2.  How is it affecting us at an Industry Level?

    3.  What can we do about it?

Insider threats, a significant risk for organizations, arise when employees, contractors, or business associates misuse access to systems, data, or facilities—whether intentionally or unintentionally—to harm the organization. These threats include theft, sabotage, data breaches, and physical harm and are often challenging to detect due to their internal nature. For HR professionals, awareness is vital to protect sensitive data, maintain workplace safety, comply with legal obligations, and mitigate financial and reputational damage. Insider threats increasingly affect organizations through data breaches, financial losses, workplace tensions, and reputational harm.

Speaker: Jennifer McKay, Agile Threat Protection & Education (ATP&E) @ NAWCAD Security Office
